POSITION SUMMARY

Serves as a resource to our patient community to provide assistance in finding all available means to assist with the funding of their healthcare services. A Financial Counselor is knowledgeable in assistance programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, Charitable Care and other payment options for healthcare services.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

- Provide financial screening and counseling for funding options for health care services. Position assesses and completes charity applications and determines charity eligibility, as well as providing assistance with applications and screening for Federal, State and local funding sources. Ensures that complete required documenting is submitted to funding sources.
- Must attend and participate in educational events and seminars to stay abreast of program changes that affect the ability to provide accurate and quality financial counseling services.
- Works collaboratively with Patient Scheduling, Registration, Patient and Family Services, physician practices and other patient advocacy agents to identify patient financial needs and how those obligations can be met. Review of current and/or scheduled admissions to ensure the capture of patients that may need financial counseling.
- Perform work that supports patient financial services and patient relations goals of the hospital. This will include prompt follow up to patient inquiries, acting as a liaison to the billing department, and conducts other duties associated to provide exceptional customer service.
- On occasion, the financial counselor may need to travel to offsite locations to provide financial counseling services. The financial counselor may be required to provide or obtain documentation on the patient’s behalf for prompt completion of applications for assistance programs.
- Timely follow up of applications for all programs. This will include follow up with patients and their families to complete documentation requirements, as well as outside entities that provide assistance. This will include the DHS offices, SSI and SSDI authorities and other supporting organizations.
- Provide face to face billing and payment assistance.
- Performs cashier functions at the cashier window. This includes processing payments and patient inquiries in a professional and competent manner. Must adhere strictly to Cash Windows procedures as set forth in the departmental policy and procedures. Accurately collect, record and reconcile payment activity from the cashier window.
- Administers Prescription Assistance program for all enrolled patients. Interacts with patients and pharmaceutical companies to provide timely application, enrollment and renewals. Additionally, completes the weekly medication orders for enrolled patients. Understands criticality of patients obtaining the medications they require (i.e., insulin) timely and without interruption.
- Assist patients with the enrollment into the ACA program.
Qualifications:
· Must obtain and maintain financial counseling credentials. High school or higher education.
· ACA certification for the federal marketplace.
· Must have at minimum 3-5 years pertinent experience in a healthcare setting as a customer service representative, financial counselor or other qualified role.
· Must have detailed knowledge of available financial assistance programs. This knowledge will include program qualifications such as health status, income guidelines and other pertinent criteria.
· Must have excellent interpersonal and telephone skills. Must have effective written and verbal communication skills. Must possess patient interview techniques
· Must have the ability to prioritize workload and possess ability to meet tight time frames. Must have the ability to work under minimal supervision, is detail oriented and possess problem-solving skills
